Odds are this is probably your first baby and I’m sure you’re wondering what you might expect to happen during a typical newborn photo session. Over the years I’ve simplified my routine to create a seamless, quick and easy way to tell your beautiful family story. Here’s the rundown of how it usually happens. Since we are still currently in the midst of Covid-19 I will also explain how I handle that too.

Typical Newborn Photo Session

When are newborn sessions?

Usually early in the morning. I will try to work with your schedule to arrive at the best time for baby. Usually around 10am. My weekdays are very flexible so I usually try to schedule on a Tuesday or Thursday morning and sometimes on Sunday.

I arrive at your home, sanitize my hands and put on my mask. I will text you upon arrival and softly knock on the door in case baby is sleeping. I will make sure not to touch anything within your home. I’ll have you (or your partner, a family member, etc.) give me a quick tour to see which spaces will work the best for photos.

Where I like to take pictures:

  • rooms with curtains so I can manipulate the light (making it darker by closing the shades as needed)
  • empty\simple walls to create clean backgrounds
  • soft light coming in from a window off to the side
  • places to lay baby like the bed or on a blanket on the floor

Getting to know you:

After we choose our location I will also look at your wardrobe and make sure everything works. We will chat and get to know each other to calm your nerves. I’ll fill you in on how I like to shoot and give you tips on how to look your best. Trust me, it’s easy! Not scary at all. I’ll ask you about your recovery and how your birth went to find out your comfort level. Are you ok walking around? Do you need to stick to the bed or couch? The most important thing is that I do not push you too hard or disturb baby. I do not want to disrupt your day.

During the session if you need to change baby or take a break to feed that is completely fine. I can even help with suggestions if this is your first child and you need some help. Be prepared – I’ve seen many many (many) diaper accidents during newborn sessions. It’s not a big deal – so don’t worry if this happens to you.

How long does it take?

Depending upon how things go I should finish up anywhere between 45mins to and hour and a half. I will make sure to capture everything from your home, your family, all of baby’s tiny details, and beautiful images of mama and baby. I realize mom’s are often the person taking the photos so I like to make sure you have something to cherish.

Receiving your photos:

When I leave I will edit the photos as quickly as possible (keep in mind I have two littles also so it really depends upon what’s going on with them). You will receive a gallery of all of your images to download in both web and print versions. You are free to print them yourself wherever you like or you can purchase directly from my online store to make it easier. Whatever works for you. And feel free to share on social media too.
