How to prep for your newborn photo session

Tips and tricks from a mom of two and Cincinnati newborn photographer

Thank you for scheduling your newborn photo session with me! I’m excited to share what I’ve learned over ten years of photo sessions and my personal experiences from two babies of my own. I know what it’s like when your expecting. Hoping to get everything right and appreciate every moment. Newborn photo sessions are the best way to look back and relive those perfect snuggles with your new baby. Most moms will tell you they can barely remember those first few weeks, because they fly by so fast.

Over the years I’ve created a pretty standard routine for my newborn sessions to make them quick, simple, and painless. If you want to find out even more check out my post detailing my typical newborn session.

  1. Before I arrive feed and burp baby. Change diaper. And put on a plain white onesie. It’s ok for baby to sleep.
  2. Find a white blanket or sheets for the bed to create a simple, clean background for the session.
  3. I recommend wearing soft, plain colors for mom and dad too. Nothing too distracting like loud hairstyles or jewelry. Think of removing watches, jewelry or extra rings on your hands and wrists.
  4. Relax. Smile. And take a moment to appreciate this tiny human you created. Setting a positive intention for the session can really help boost your mood (even if the house is a mess and you’re exhausted).
  5. Trust – I will help in every way that I can to make this easy on you. It’s my job to make you look good. You just need to show up 🙂
  6. Don’t worry about spending time researching inspiration. I will make sure to photograph a beautiful collection of images capturing every little detail.

I hope this helped you prep for your newborn photo session! I’m always happy to answer questions too.
